5 Principles
My success in technology leadership and consulting roles comes from applying 5 Principles of management that encompass a broad range of technology competencies with an ever-increasing knowledge of business functions and partnerships focused on service delivery. These 5 Principles are founded on the belief that competitive advantages follow the efficient and productive use of Information.
1. Be a Business Strategist
It is critical to understanding how to set goals and evaluate their impact on business processes. Organizations today must evaluate and understand the impact of Cloud based services, SaaS applications, and Personal Technology allowances (allowing people to use their own Mobile Platforms, Social Networking, Home Offices, etc) on Operational efficiency and Personal Productivity, rather than focusing solely on how they will affect IT.
2. Be a Transformational Leader
Technology leaders must encourage and help their organizations understand the operational challenges and strategies of the business and how their decisions affect them. Leaders empower employees by fostering & encouraging partnerships across business lines, by demonstrating how their decisions impact business Operations and Processes and then allowing them to work with business peers and partners on beneficial opportunities.
3. Focus on Enterprise Strategy, Innovation, and Differentiation
The greatest amount of value comes from strategic planning that focuses on the technologies and applications that will position a business for growth, performance, and enhanced value. Leaders must envision what best-performing, market leading organizations are going to look like in 5 years, then work backward to determine what their organizations need to do today to achieve that vision.
4. Focus on Partnering with the Business and Process Transformation
To understand what the best-performing, market leading organizations are going to look like in 5 years, technology organizations must partner with business organizations. Partnering must replace passive alignment with active participation in business goals and objectives.
5. Focus on Risk Management and Operational Excellence
Technology leaders must stop evaluating new technologies on the basis of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Technologies offer limited opportunities for building competitive advantage, therefore their impact on operational efficiency and productivity must be jointly evaluated with the business to determine their impact on competitive advantage.
